Village fire loss estimates soar

2012-01-25 / Local News

There was nearly $360,000 more in fire losses in the Village of Kenmore in 2011 than in the previous year.

Kenmore Fire Department’s Chief Brendan J. Kiefer said the rise in damages — from $114,100 in 2010 to $474,050 in 2011 — was attributed to four serious single-family home fires and one apartment fire.

In the two fire protection districts in the Town of Tonawanda, which are serviced by Kenmore, the estimated loss in the Deerhurst District was zero for 2011 compared to $36,500 in 2010.

The North Delaware District had a loss $66,550, which included two residential fires, as compared to $2,500 for 2010.

Kenmore firefighters answered a total of 1,461 calls in 2011, including 1,044 for emergency medical services. This compares to a total of 1,388 calls with 1,028 for EMS in 2010. Volunteer man-hours for all calls were 5,758 for 2011.
