Blue Devils place first at Cattaraugus Invite
Kenmore West continued its impressive season on the wrestling mat when the team traveled to Cattaraugus-Little Valley High School for the Cattaraugus Little Valley Invitational Tournament on Saturday.
After four Blue Devil wrestlers turned in first-place performances, Kenmore West wrapped up the high total of 256.5 points to finish first overall as a team in the tournament. Fredonia was second with 233.5 points.
The Blue Devils rolled through the Round Robin tournament. They began in the 99-pound weight class, where Anthony Argentieri took home first place with a 4-2 decision over Chautauqua Lake’s Nick Hudson.
At 113 pounds, Ron Duguay rolled with three pins and a decision victory over Allegany-Limestone’s Jordan Kayes to earn a bye into the final round. He faced Fredonia’s Pat McCarthy and clinched first place with a 4-3 decision.
Zach Skiba had a bye into the second round of Pool A at 145 pounds. He earned two pins to advance to face Cattaraugus-Little Valley’s Clarence Famham in round four. After earning a 6-1 decision, he then defeated Wilson’s Chase Wheeler, 3-1, to claim first place.
Kenmore West’s other first place finisher came at 285 pounds as John Szurzynski faced Kenmore East’s Aaron Barraclough. Szurzynski pinned Barraclough in 3:47 to capture first place.
Kenmore East did have one first place finisher as Kurt McGowan took home the title at 126 pounds. McGowan didn’t have the easiest time getting to the finals, but he did enough to pin Cattaraugus-Little Valley’s Gabe Grey before defeating Clarence’s Delany Stewart, Fredonia’s Julius Woma and Randolph’s Jeremy Parkhurst to advance to the final. McGowan defeated Gowanda’s Lucas McKeever, 4-2, to finish in first place. Kenmore East finished 10th out of 11 teams with 57.5 points.
