Community’s Groundhog Day support appreciated

Being asked to come out in support of an event held at the crack of dawn isn’t the most appealing request for some people, but Village of Kenmore residents, including Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda School District students and local dignitaries, as well as others in the community, showed that it’s never too early in the day to have a celebration.

Individuals showed up on the Kenmore Village Green at roughly 7 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, to attend the Kenmore Village Improvement Society’s inaugural Groundhog Day celebration. It was somewhat of a marvel to see so many people willing to get up that early to get a glimpse of Kenmore’s “groundhog,” but we guess that this type of support is what we should come to expect from those who live in the village. Residents seem to love the camaraderie and fun that comes from participating in community functions. The attendance wasn’t a disappointment this time, nor do we expect it will be for any other family-oriented event in the village.

Not only did residents get involved, but local businesses showed their dedication to the cause as well.

Paula’s Donuts invented a special donut with a groundhog face for the occasion, and Dunkin’ Donuts pitched in with coffee and hot chocolate for attendees.

We are happy to see this type of creativity and generosity from businesses. Times are tough, money is tight, and donation requests for products are many, but these companies still wanted to help make this particular event something to remember.

And then there is the Kenmore Village Improvement Society, a group of volunteers from the community who work hard to ensure that the area is provided with a number of family friendly activities throughout the year.

The collaboration of a community, its government, local businesses and activist groups, along with a little support from The Bee, helped make this first-time event a special one. It wouldn’t have been possible without all those who were involved.

We encourage people in the village to continue attending the Groundhog Day celebration and other KVIS events throughout the year as each event seems to get bigger and better with time.
