Kenmore East eyes first place in division

Kenmore East picked up two more victories this past week with wins over Sweet Home and North Tonawanda. That ran their record to 11-1-1 overall on the season, good for 23 points. That still had them one point behind Williamsville East for first place in the Small School standings as of Tuesday morning.
On Thursday, Kenmore East picked up its 10th win of the season with a 7-2 triumph over Sweet Home. The star was senior forward Don Battista, who had a four-point night with three goals and an assist. Sophomore defenseman Taylor Davis had three assists to finish second in scoring for the game, while Andy Robinson, John Mirabella and Nick Pagliacci each had two points. Austin Ford and Mike Diliberto added goals.
Michael Davern started in goal for Kenmore East and made 19 saves on 21 shots.
Kenmore East kept things rolling on Saturday with a dominating, 11-0 win over North Tonawanda. Battista and Pagliacci each had three-point nights as they both tallied two goals and an assist. Also scoring two goals in the game for the Bulldogs were Andrew Sturtz and Diliberto. Kenmore East’s other three goals were scored by Davis, Ford and Dan Giliforte. Ford’s goal came on the power play.
The Bulldogs gave up just seven shots on goal in the game. Trevor Taggart and Derrick Ford split the duties in goal and stopped all seven shots.
Taggart has played the most in net for the Bulldogs this season and has posted a 4-0-1 record with a 1.88 goals-against average. Offensively, the Bulldogs have been led by Battista and Pagliacci, their top-two scorers. Battista leads the way with 31 points, while Pagliacci has 30. Battista is the team-leader with 16 goals, while Pagliacci is tied for the team lead with 18 assists. Ford also has 18 assists on the season. Pagliacci and Ford are also tied for the team lead in power play goals with four.
The Bulldogs have one more chance to catch Williamsville East in the standings during their final regular season game. Kenmore East will play St. Francis at 9 p.m. Thursday at the Northtown Center. St. Francis comes in with a 9-2 record and 19 points.
First-place Williamsville East also has just one regular season game left as they take on West Seneca West at 9 p.m. on Friday at the Northtown Center. Whichever team finishes in first will be the top seed for the Federation Small School playoffs and have the inside track for the Championship game during Super Sunday at the First Niagara Center on Feb. 26.
