Snow shuts down portion of I-290 East

Blowing, drifting, “constant” snow caused a section of eastbound Interstate 290 from I-190 to Elmwood Avenue to temporarily shut down Monday morning and into the afternoon.

“This is a result of extreme weather conditions,” said Capt. Joseph F. Carosi, spokesman for the Town of Tonawanda Police Department in an email.

“Continued snow accompanied by driving wind and drifting [snow] has necessitated this closure.”

I-290 east reopened later that day around 1:40 p.m.

The closure followed approximately 10 vehicular crashes, including a few that had gone into snowbanks, said Carosi. There were not, however, any serious injuries. Additionally, in two separate incidents tractor-trailers had jack-knifed, he said.
