Town libraries benefit from ‘Big Book Sale’

The Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Friends of the Library has reached its goal after a three-year drive to raise funds for library renovations and improvements. The group’s donations to the town’s public library system — since January 2014 — total $50,000.

“What started in 2014 as a goal to renovate the community rooms quickly became a chance to do even more for the libraries,” said Friends President Laura Glass. “The money comes from our annual ‘Big Book Sale,’ and community support has been phenomenal.”

The financial donations have turned into tangible improvements at both the Kenmore and Kenilworth branches. Improvements funded by Friends of the Library donations include underwriting programs and library building improvements both inside and outside the branches.

At Kenmore, the community rooms were upgraded, while Kenilworth community room renovations are currently underway. According to a prepared statement, other improvements include computer carrels, tables and chairs, fresh paint throughout the Kenmore branch in addition to exterior lighting, security system upgrades and landscaping, and a Smartboard and a storage shed at Kenilworth.

“Our mission as Friends of the Library,” explained Glass, “is to encourage lifelong learning in our community by fostering a love of reading and creating a comfortable space for library patrons.”

Reading books remains one of America’s favorite pastimes. A Jan. 6 Gallup poll said that 53 percent of Americans, ages 18-29, and 48 percent, ages 65 and over, read between one and 10 books last year, and 73 percent prefer printed books over e-books, according to the statement.

The Friends of the Library is accepting book donations for the 2017 Big Book Sale, which will be held in September.

Bring books, audio books, DVDs and recorded music to the Kenmore Library Branch, located at 160 Delaware Road in Tonawanda, or the Kenilworth Library Branch at 318 Montrose Ave. in Tonawanda.

All donations are tax deductible. For more information, visit www.ktfol.com. The Kenmore Town of Tonawanda Friends of the Library is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
