Alan L. McCarthy, former Ken-Ton elementary principal


McCarthy McCarthy Alan L. McCarthy, 90, a former elementary principal in the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda School District, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2017.

Mr. McCarthy, a resident of Williamsville, was born on April 25, 1927, in Buffalo and grew up in the City of Tonawanda. He was a graduate of Kibler High School in 1945 where he was a standout swimmer for four years.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and competed with the First Army Swim Team until his discharge one year later. Mr. Mc- Carthy then enrolled at Buffalo State Teachers College where he was a member of the varsity swimming team for four years. He completed his bachelor’s degree in education in 1951 and earned his master’s degree in administration in 1956 also from Buffalo State.

Mr. McCarthy was elementary supervisor in the Attica Central schools for three years before joining the Kenmore Town of Tonawanda schools where he served for 27 years. He was principal of Jefferson Elementary School and the George Washington Elementary School.

He was also a member of the Kenmore Lions Club and the St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral Choir.

Mr. McCarthy is survived by four children, A. Scott, Timothy, Steven and Michael; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Joan (nee Rub).

A Eucharistic memorial service was held on Sept. 9 in St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral.
