Realtor of the Year Joan Stovroff, left, receives her award from Dawn Brown, past president of Buffalo Niagara Association of Realtors. The Buffalo Niagara Association of Realtors recently presented the Realtor of the Year Award to Joan Stovroff of Stovroff & Taylor Real Estate at its inaugural event. Stovroff, a Tonawanda resident, has been a Realtor for more than 55 years.

The criteria for the Realtor of the Year Award include business accomplishments, civic activity, association participation and Realtor spirit.

Recipients of the honor go beyond selling houses to promoting and personifying the principles of good real estate practice, community involvement and ethical conduct, according to the Buffalo Niagara Association of Realtors.

Sixty years ago, Stovroff & Herman opened its doors, and, in addition to selling homes, began to foster the careers of local industry professionals.

By the 1980s, the firm, which was co-owned by Stovroff and her late husband, Morton, became the No. 1 real estate firm in the region.

At that time, it was almost unheard of to have a woman at the helm of a business, but Stovroff was never a slave to tradition, barriers or misogyny, according to the Buffalo Niagara Association of Realtors.

She has made many contributions to the real estate industry and is described as working tirelessly for the Realtor Association, serving on numerous committees; being fluent in Professional Standards; and receiving her Realtor Emeritus Designation in 2010.

Stovroff’s business success and community involvement resulted in numerous accolades, including Woman of the Year in 1992 and Business First Woman of the Year for 2008.

She also combined a great passion of hers — travel — with business, and Stovroff & Taylor Travel was recognized with the Peak of Excellence award, a distinction among business leaders, innovators and passionate professionals within the industry.

Stovroff and Taylor will be celebrating 30 years of business this year.
