Zach Braddell was unstoppable at Saturday’s Section VI Class C Championships at Falconer High School.

The Tonawanda junior went 3-0 to win the 126-pound weight class.

Braddell defeated Tony Fiasco of Falconer by technical fall, 17-2, in the quarterfinals, and pinned Jake Bensley of Medina in 3:34 in the semifinals and Nick Brown of Springville in 1:56 in the final.

“It was a workman-like effort from Zach and he wrestled well,” Tonawanda coach Dan Bishop said.

Braddell is one of five Tonawanda wrestlers to advance to Saturday’s Section VI Division II State Qualifier at Lake Shore High School.

Joining him will be Nick Szortyka (106), Jason Frazer (160) and Destin Tirado (182), who each placed second, and Nick Burda, who took fourth at 182.

Szortyka went 2-1, beating Miguel Salas of Newfane by technical fall, 16-0, in the quarterfinals, teammate Joey McDonald, 3-0, in the semifinals and was pinned by Mike Evans of Springville in the final.

“He wrestled tough,” Bishop said. “He wrestled against a kid in the finals who is favored to place at the state tournament.”

Frazer bumped up a weight class and beat James Essenburg of Newfane, 6-4, in the quarterfinals, Charles Rizzo of Eden, 5-1, in the semifinals and was pinned by Dan Torres of Falconer in the final.

Frazer was 1-2 against Rizzo in matches earlier in the season.

Tirado went 2-1, earning major decisions over Quenten Leicht of Springville, 10-1, and Ben Restivo of Albion, 12-3, and losing by major decision, 16-3, against Julian Nixon of Newfane.

“Destin usually wrestles at 160 and I felt like he had a better option of making the state tournament at 182 and he wrestled well,” Bishop said.

Burda went 2-2 overall and lost to Ben Restivo of Albion, 8-5, in the third-place match.

Also placing but not advancing are McDonald (106, fifth), Andrew Marquez (113, sixth), Caden Herman (132, fifth) and Reilly Whipple (170, sixth).

Tonawanda finished fourth out of 11 teams with 142 points.

The Section VI Division II Tournament begins at 10 a.m.

North Tonawanda

Tyler Bartolomei was North Tonawanda’s lone champion at Saturday’s Class A Tournament at Sweet Home High School.

The North Tonawanda junior went 3-0 to win the 106-pound weight class, pinning Tyler Wilkenson of West Seneca West in the quarterfinals and Jaden Friel of Williamsville South in the semifinals, and then beating Jack Randle of Grand Island by major decision, 10-0, in the final.

Bartolomei improved to 36-0.

Bartolomei, along with seniors Logan Kent (152, second) and Jordan Holmes (285, third) qualified for Saturday’s Section VI Division I State Qualifier at North Tonawanda High School.

Kent won by a 15-7 major decision over Kole Taylor of Hamburg in the semifinals and lost to Adam Daghestani of Grand Island, 3-1, in the final.

Coach Joe Hooley said he is looking to put in some solid work this week to help get Bartolomei, Kent and Holmes to wins in the sectional finals.

Robert Meyer (120), Jacob Dotterwiech (138) and James Wekenmann (182) all placed sixth.

The Lumberjacks took seventh overall with 70 points.
