Community Hub, tax assistance planned at NT church

The North Tonawanda Community Resource Hub and a free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Tax Preparation Site will be available on Wednesday, March 21, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 265 Falconer St. in North Tonawanda.

The Hub will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and free tax preparation will run from noon to 3 p.m.

According to the Mobile Safety-Net Team, the North Tonawanda community faces challenges with service connectivity, geographic barriers, poverty and lack of access to basic human needs-based services.

In 2016, American Fact Finder found that 49.6 percent of North Tonawanda residents made less than $50,000 annually.

In response to the community’s need, the North Tonawanda Community Resource Hub has partnered with the Niagara University VITA Program to offer free itemized and Schedule C tax preparation. IRS-certified volunteers will file the taxes of residents who are making $60,000 or less, in North Tonawanda.

Tax preparation will be by appointment only, and residents from North Tonawanda and surrounding communities should call 427-4893 to schedule an appointment.

The VITA program is sponsored by the IRS and offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, people with disabilities and limited-English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.

For more information about other free, walk-in and appointment-based tax preparation services, call 211 or 888-696-9211 for a nearby location.

Created in 2015, the North Tonawanda Coalition aims to unite human service providers, public service organizations and individuals to improve the quality of life for the North Tonawanda community by facilitating cooperation, collaboration, communication and creation of new initiatives.

Currently, the group has active representation from: Redeemer Lutheran Church, Orleans Niagara BOCES, Catholic Charities, Opportunities Unlimited, Lumber City Development Corporation, Hearts and Hands, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Niagara Community Action Program, Inc., North Tonawanda Schools, North Tonawanda

Parks and Recreation, Northpointe Council, YWCA of the Niagara Frontier, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, North Tonawanda Common Council, the Mobile Safety-Net Team and The John R. Oishei Foundation.
