Congressman set to address Chamber, discuss economic development at monthly luncheon

Higgins Higgins Rep. Brian Higgins, D-Tonawanda, will be the guest speaker at the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Chamber of Commerce’s October luncheon, being held from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at the Holiday Inn, 1881 Niagara Falls Blvd., Amherst.

Higgins is a fifth-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives serving New York’s 26th Congressional District, which includes portions of Erie and Niagara counties.

Higgins has been a champion of waterfront development in Buffalo and Western New York. He led the fight for a $279 million settlement from the New York Power Authority that is now financing a major transformation of Buffalo's long-neglected inner and outer harbors. In the nation’s capital, he is an advocate for policies important to the WNY economy. He is an avid supporter of increased funding for biomedical research, an area creating jobs along the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, and a strong voice for infrastructure investment and nation building at home.

In the 113th Congress, the congressman continues to serve on the House Committee on Homeland Security and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, where he aims to position the Western New York border community in the forefront of national discussions and help to advance the Peace Bridge project and improve border operations to strengthen economic ties with Canada. His membership on the Committee on Foreign Affairs is timely, given the existing conflicts in the Middle East and ongoing relations with China, whose currency policies affect the American economy.

During his discussion at the luncheon, Higgins will provide an update on his work in Western New York and in Washington, D.C., with a focus on economic development and nation building at home. Recent events in Washington will also be touched on. The presentation will be followed by a brief question-and-answer session.

The cost to attend the event is $20 and includes a choice of chicken souvlaki salad or penne paste primavera, Italian wedding soup, rolls and butter, tea and coffee, and dessert. Call the Chamber at 874-1202 to make a reservation.
