Bee Newspapers honored by NY Press Association

Bee Group Newspapers captured three awards in this year’s Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the New York Press Association.

Managing Editor David Sherman won first place in the Spot News Photo category for a photo of a Clarence house fire taken in July.

“The photographer was alert and prepared to capture the critical action at this house fire,” wrote the judges.

Sherman also won second place in the same category for a photo published by the Lancaster and Depew Bees.

It showed a Depew firefighter using an ax to break a large glass block window during a blaze which extensively damaged the Boys and Girls Club on New Year’s Day.

Amherst Bee Reporter Patrick Nagy won an honorable mention in the Best Sports Coverage category. Judges wrote, “The author clearly is in touch with the community. An entry chock full of well-written stories.”

A total of 158 newspapers submitted more than 2,700 entries in this year’s competition. Judging was conducted by members of the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association.
