Student charged with falsely reporting an incident on Twitter

Matthew Elkington, 16, a student at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, has been charged with one count of falsely reporting an incident in the third degree, a misdemeanor, according to Town of Tonawanda police.

The charges followed an Oct. 16 incident when Elkington allegedly posted a “school shooter alert” to his Twitter account, indicating that a student at Kenmore West High School planned to shoot other students at Kenmore West.

An investigation revealed that Elkington and the student he named are friends and that the posting was a prank, according to police.

Elkington’s tweet was meant to be a joke among their circle of friends and not intended to cause any alarm, police said.

An appearance ticket was issued, and he is scheduled for arraignment in Town of Tonawanda Court at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6.
