Ellicott Creek Fire Company awarded grant for more than $18,000

Ellicott Creek Fire Company was recently awarded a grant totaling $18,572, according to Rep. Brian Higgins. t is a federal fire grant that has been provided through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The AFG program will award $340 million in grants to fire departments nationwide this year.

“Our volunteer firefighters provide a selfless service to this community,” said Higgins. “This award supports Ellicott Creek firefighters with equipment that protects their safety as they work around the clock to protect the safety of others.”

Ellicott Creek Fire Chief Joe Osika says the grant will provide the department with much-needed equipment, particularly new helmets.

The last direct federal fire grant that the company received was in 2003. It provided funds for a firefighter accountability system, which helps track firefighters at the scene of a fire.

The Ellicott Creek Fire Company has more than 60 active volunteers serving portions of Amherst and Tonawanda. The company is expanding, with construction currently under way on a new Fire Department Substation at 3000 Sweet Home Road.
