Karen L. Novelli, local chef, Sweet Home graduate

Karen Lee Novelli (nee Mc- Neely), 55, of Gastonia, North Carolina, formerly of the Town of Tonawanda, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018.

Mrs. Novelli was born on Jan. 25, 1962. She graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1980. She attended the culinary arts program through BOCES and also worked as a chef in various locations in Tonawanda and Amherst.

In 1986, she married Richard Novelli, and they moved to Gastonia in 1998 in order for him to start his own construction business. During her time in Gastonia, Mrs. Novelli wrote and published a children’s book.

She then went into the health field, while attempting to go to school to become a registered nurse. She mainly worked private duty for many clients and always felt the need to take care of the elderly.

Most recently, the Novellis built a retirement cabin in the Smoky Mountains. Although the cabin was recently completed, she was unable to spend time there due to her illness.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Novelli is survived by three children, Jeramie, Shawn and Devin; one grandchild; and four siblings, Lynn Marie Kobylanski, Deborah Hollamby, Harold McNeely and JoAnn LaPenna.

A private memorial will be held by the family at a later date.
