Tonawanda man is top co-angler in lake fishing tourney

Sakae Ushio, a resident of Tonawanda, won the co-angler division of the Costa FLW Series Northern Division Tournament, which took place on Lake Erie on July 26. Ushio earned the win by reeling in a one-day catch of five bass weighing a total of 23 pounds, 7 ounces.

Along with top honors, he was rewarded with a Ranger Z175 fishing boat with a 90-horsepower outboard motor, and $27,250.

Finishing behind Ushio in the co-angler division were Chris Benninger of Grand Island, who placed second by catching five bass weighing 23 pounds, 6 ounces, and Colton Sowers of Venetia, Pennsylvania, who placed third by catching five bass weighing 23 pounds, 4 ounces. Benninger and Sowers won $5,350 and $4,400, respectively.

Will Rogers of Grand Island placed fourth by catching five bass weighing in at 22 pounds, 2 ounces, and was rewarded with $3,650.

Professional angler Neil Farlow of St. Catharines, Ontario, won the overall tournament with a single-day catch of five bass weighing 24 pounds, 4 ounces, receiving the top prize of $87,500 that included a Ranger Z518 with a 200-horsepower outboard engine.

Tournament officials had to shorten the three-day tournament to one day of competition due to high winds.

Sponsored by Polaris, the Costa FLW Series on Lake Erie was hosted by the Buffalo Niagara Sports Commission and was the second of three Costa FLW Series Northern Division tournaments of the 2018 regular season. The next tournament, which will be the final Northern Division event of the year, will take place Sept. 6-8 in the Thousand Islands region of the state near Clayton.
