Buffalo resident Shenice Williams, 8, chooses her new coat during the first distribution event of this year’s Coats 4 Kids campaign on Saturday. Colvin Cleaners is looking for more coats for kids, among other winter items, after the first of its three free distribution events for this year’s Coats 4 Kids campaign brought in nearly 6,500 coats, gloves, scarves and hats.

The company said the event, which took place Saturday at the Knights of Columbus hall on Kenmore Avenue, set a one-day distribution record for the campaign.

“We had more than 400 people checked in prior to our 9 a.m. opening, and by 9:05 the entire Knights of Columbus basketball court was filled with people going through the racks looking for the perfect winter coat,” said Paul Billoni, president and CEO of Colvin Cleaners. “It was the most organized mayhem ever, and it was gratifying to see so many families happy because they found winter coats, gloves, hats and scarves for their family members.”

By comparison, the company distributed a grand total of 13,350 coats during last year’s campaign, which was also record-setting. In response to the overwhelming need, the company is issuing a renewed call for donations.

Billoni said for the remaining days before the next distribution event on Nov. 17, Colvin Cleaners is putting out a call for donations of gently used or new winter coats, jackets, gloves, hats and scarves for toddlers to young adults, for families in need this winter season.
